A Birth ~ A New Beginning

Jillian Hope Joyner

Jillian Hope Joyner

It’s the Catch 22 of life and blogging – so much is happening that you don’t have time to blog, and then when you do, so much has happened that you don’t know where to begin, how much to say, or what to include/leave out so you don’t bore or scare your readers away. I like to write, in fact I love writing. I prefer writing to talking. If you know me you know that generally, I’m rather quiet. I prefer to listen. But with writing, I could go on forever –  given time.

I’ll start with the most recent news first – my new granddaughter, Jillian Hope Joyner. That’s news enough, but the story is even better when you learn that she was born on my birthday, and we share the same rare blood type O neg, too. I could give you all the details, because I was blessed to be there for ever minute of it (who else can take all those once-in-a-lifetime photos?)  But I won’t. I’ll share the usual, 7 lbs 12 oz, 20″, 10 fingers, 10 toes, a rosebud mouth and a very calm temperment.

Big sister meets little sister
Big sister meets little sister

That sums up November 16 to present – a most memorable birthDAY and week spent with this wee priceless gift I received and her family.

The birthday celebration actually started on Saturday when I went to see the movie Precious and spend the afternoon with my gal pal Michael.  I made the mistake of mentioning it was my birthday when we lunched at Don Pablos.
Birthday Sombrero

I only share that photo with you because I have this one to share from my 2nd day of birthday celebrating:
Amazing what a little lighting, wardrobe, hair and make-up will do.
Amazing what a little lighting, wardrobe, hair and make-up will do.

This was taken at the amazing (and more discreet when it comes to acknowledging your bithday) Volt restaurant, home to (so cute) Top Chef contestant Bryan Voltaggio. Sunday brunch was a birthday present from my sister. Maybe I’ve been living wrong, but I have never had better food anywhere, than I had at Volt. Each bite was a bit of heaven, and of course the presentation was artistic. We all know cooking is an art, but Bryan’s art is a masterpiece. At one point he stepped into the dining room he made my eyes light up. (Star-struck? A crush? A fan? ) If I could have taken him home a gallon of his pear sorbet, it would keep me satisfied until my next visit, but I’ll just have to wait and dream. I’m rooting for him to win.

Later that day, all 20 of my immediate family dined at Maggianos.  Did I tell you my husband’s birthday was November 13th? So it was a big, noisy, happy family celebration. Fortunatley Maggiano’s is used to that.
Sights on the Vegas Strip

Sights on the Vegas Strip

I’m moving backwards in time, so that next, or previously, was my trip to Vegas to attend Ali Brown’s SHINE event to learn how to create an authentic and prosperous business.  I was surround by amazing, confident women , many of whom knew just whet they wanted out of life (and maybe 85% were younger than me). Being a late bloomer, I went to find out exactly what my business was, where do i go from here. This year I have been soul-searching to find what it is I really want to do with my life. Where do my passions truly lie? How can I best share them with the world? It forced me to confront some things that I been putting off looking at, partly due to being so busy, but mainly because I was afraid to face what I know deep down – it’s time for me to step up my game and step into my true purpose. It means moving outside of my comfort zone and living my passion. It’s big ideas and baby steps. By asking myself a few key questions (and believe me, first you have to know which questions to ask),  and then having the time in Vegas to listen for and realize the answers, I am starting back on the path and with the intentions I set out on 10 years ago. You’ll hear more about it all in the new year. I am ready for this, and very excited.

Another way I celebrated my birthday was to have my first ever Birthday Bash sale on TAP and had an amazing response. Thanks to all of you who participated. Timing was good because of all the holiday crafting taking place right now.  Did you miss out? Be sure to sign up for my Newsletter where I announce all sales and other goodies FIRST. In fact, I’m considering a first ever (and maybe only) sale on my Fragments. I’m sure you won’t want to miss out on that.

Wow, it seems like so much is going on here (and believe me there is) but now you have the highlights. There’s a lot going on behind the scenes and exciting things are in the wings. It was in 2000, just about 10 years ago, that I went “public” with my LaLasLand website, began teaching and took the first steps of this journey I’m on - long before blogs, Facebook & Twitter. I like the fact that new, big changes are on their way in 2010, a new decade, tryly a new age.

My “If You Were Born on This Day” horoscope reads “Your expectations are high for this year and you’ll be able to meet them. You want the love and loyalty of certain people in your circle, and you’ll get it in January. You realize your leadership potential in March. Spring brings inprovement in your professional scene and probably a new cast of characters, too.  I’m ready, with arms wide open. This sums it up perfectly.

Jillian, ready for the world~

Are you ready with arms wide open? Drop me a line, make a comment. I’d love to hear your plans for 2010. And if you’ve read this very long blog entry this far – THANK YOU!

Source of Inspiration

Friday, October 30th, 2009

What is it about my obsession with quotes? I have been collecting them since I was 13 and using them in my art for over 10 years. A quote is a wisdom sound bite about life. The quotes in my collection ring true for me. They open my eyes to what is real, what is genuine, provide the answers I search for and remind me of things I need to remember. This quote sums it up pretty well:

Science is organized knowledge.
Wisdom is organized life.
Emanuel Kant

One of the most frequent questions I get as a teacher and artist  is, “Where do you find your quotes?” My short answer is, “They are everywhere.”  But I know the asker wants a more specific answer and I am always happy to share my sources. So here’s my newest source, and by far my favorite. It’s fun, it’s interactive and it takes advantage of all the latest technology has to offer.

The video is advertising their iPhone app, but anyone can use their website, iWise.com. Warning! Plan to spend some time on their website., it’s addictive. Enjoy!

Creative Ways with Books and Journals

Creative Ways with Books and Journals

I just had to pop in and tell you that my contributor copy of Creative Ways with Books & Journals just arrived. Unexpected mail is always so exciting isn’t it?  Sue Bleiweiss and Terri Stegmiller of Two Creative Studio did an amazing job of self-publishing, so obviously not only are they talented artists, but book designers, photographers and editors.

And if you’re into books as much as I am, check out the newly updated Recommended Books section of my website. Every (and I mean every) book I list is in my own personal library. Take a look, I told you I love books. If only I had more time to read, reread and fondle them all.

OK - back to Quilt Market/Festival prep. I’m coming down the home stretch. All the big stuff is done and on it’s way. This time next week I’ll be setting up my booth and delivering my Schoolhouse presentation on TAP ™ at Quilt Market. Wish me luck!

Quick Hello & Wedding Update

Before the Ceremony

Before the Ceremony

Can it be a week already since I snapped this photo of my daughters dreamy gaze before her wedding? I have gone from one whirlwind to the next. Is life always this intense? I feel guilty just taking the time to write this post. There is so much to do in preparation for Quilt Market & Festival. But I feel the need to pop into your lives and say hello – to share in the happiness we created last weekend.

It was a grey, grey day. The sun did not shine. Accuweather predicted showers at 11, 1 and 3 – the wedding time. It sprinked at 11. I sprinkled at 1, so I was hesitant to give the OK for the outdoor wedding. But really – how often is the weather forecast accurate? 3 for 3? I doubt it. The amazing caterer and DJ were game enough to let me wait to the last minute to make the call. At 20 to 3 we were out on the lawn, and I said, “Let’s go for it.” As soon as I said it I received a message from above – thunder. That was the sign I was looking for. So instead of the idyllic setting down by the gazebo, overlooking the pond, we held the ceremony in the tent. And a fine ceremony it was. That it happend to pour so very loudly during their vows really didn’t matter. The look in their eyes said it all.

The Bridal Party

If you carry an umbrella, it never rains. But if you have a tent, it just might rain.

If you carry an umbrella, it never rains. But if you have a tent, it just might rain.

No one cared. Like I told Sam in the days before when the weather forecast looked unpromising, “It’s not about the weather.” It was cozy, intimate. It was friends and family. It was two people in love celebrating with the ones they loved.

The Cast of Characters

The Cast of Characters

I decided to be a participant and not a recorder of this day. After all, that’s what we hired the professional photographer to do. And as mother of the bride and wedding coordinator, I had plenty to do as it was. Being a wedding far from home for most of the guests, many arrived early. So, at 2:40, while I was outside in my jeans and t-shirt still deciding where to hold the ceremony, a sweaty  glowing mother-of-the- bride greeted many guests. I have always said I clean up real good.  And I must have, because 30 minutes later everyone said I looked beautiful. I’ll have to take their word for it until the “real” photos are ready. The photos I share here were taken by guests and my husband and there is not one of me. (Why should there be?)

A few of the Fragments I've been working on

A few of the 100 new Fragments I've been working on

OK, so here’s the scoop. This website is a new beginning for me. (Can you believe the other was 10 years old!) The day after Labor Day also signifies new beginnings, fresh starts, going back to school or work, a chance to gather and store information for the days ahead, just like the squirrels outside my window hoarding nuts for the future.  More than anything I loved the first day of school and all the possibilities that lay ahead of me ~ the smell of new textbooks and the knowledge that awaited me. I am still a seeker (thrillseeker?) of knowledge and I want to share the thrills here with you.

I promise to be more present here on the web. I promise to deliver timely, relevant and significant content about art, inspiration and creativity. And as you know, life is art and our art is influenced by our lives, so there will be personal content which will indirectly relate to art. You’ll definately hear about (and see photos) from my daughter’s upcoming wedding (this Saturday, September 12th), and the other daughter’s new baby girl (due November).

I’ll also be posting on Facebook more often. And I’ll be doing something really cool with Twitter - tweets I think you’ll be happy to receive, so I hope you’ll follow me on both. (There’s a link to follow me right there on the right of your screen) It’s time for me to reconnect with you and also with myself.  To get back to doing what I love ~  inspiring others to create. Whether it be through this website, the classes I teach, my books & DVDs,  the art I make, the sharing of true and honest quotes or the words & work of another artist, or even the photos I artfully compose to record my life ~ I’ll be here.

Announcements & Catching Up

Sunday, February 22nd, 2009

It's snowing here in DC. A cold gray day, perfect for snuggling inside and catching up on this, that, and if there's time left, the other. I have a lot of upcoming things to share with you. Many days I feel like I am busy all day but get nothing done. But now looking at this list, I can see the fruits of my labor and yes, I have gotten a lot done. It's important to compile a list like this once in a while, if only for your own satisfaction of seeing your accomplishments pile up. Here are my February accomplishments, in no particular order.

Angelas

1. Taught a class at Angela's Happy Stamper in Reston, VA yesterday. Claudine Hellmuth and I made a day of it, each doing a 1/2 day of  book signing and a 1/2 day class. Great shop, great students (as always).

2. Completed a Guest Blogger entry for Quilting Gallery which will be online Thursday, February 26th.

Quilting-gallery

3. Submitted work for Layers Upon Layers blog, to be online Thursday March 5th.

FabricSm72

4. Designed, painted and printed this fabric for use in an upcoming Quilting Arts project. (Comments appreciated & welcome)

5. Completed and submitted another Artist to Artist interview for Cloth Paper Scissors magazine.

Birthdays

6. Had a small, intimate, immediate family only gathering (just 20 of us) to celebrate the February birthdays –  son Chris (24), daughter Kerry (20) and sister Katie, my little sister.

Quilt

7. Completed this small quilt, playing around with some new fabric fragment ideas and techniques. (Comments & critiques welcome)

8. Completed another article for the Spring issue of Studios magazine, which is now available for pre-order.

StudiosSpring

9. Received my contributor copy of Creative Awakenings – Envisioning the Life of Your Dreams Through Art by creativity coach, Sherri Gaynor. A great book to do just that – awaken your creativity. my contribution and project is entitled  Finding Meaning in the Bottom of a Bowl. (OK, so this is technically not a February 2009 accomplishment, but when it comes to books, they aren't real to me until you can hold them in your hand.)

Creative_awakenings(2)

10. Completed my class description for a great NEW art retreat taking place a year from now, February  18-22, 2010 - An Artful Journey in Los Gatos, CA. There are also small mini-events taking place this year – all organized by Cindy O'Leary. Check it out.

11. Had a fantastic networking lunch with author, pattern & fabric designer, Pat Sloan, to pick her brain and get advice about vending at the huge International Quilt Market & Festival on October. It's a big step and I'm (gulp) scared.

12. Wrote a whopping 4 blog entries this month, including this one…..not too proud of that but when you have to choose between beingproductive inthe studio and comunicating with the rest of the world, well – let's just say it takes a LOT of discipline and time management to do both successfully.

Home-Page-Welcome3

13. Wrote another Guest Blogger entry for Fabulous Fabric Art with Lutradur contributor Jenn Mason's BRILLIANT NEW BLOG Everyday Artist Studio. It's scheduled for Wednesday, March 4th. And a little birdie told me she's having a GIVEAWAY for Fabulous Fabric Art with Lutradur.

14. Painted yards and yards of Lutradur for my classes. I used Claudine's STUDIO paints. Those little jars sure go a long way.

Claudine

I've been at this so long it is not longer snowing. It's still cold, but the sun is shining and I am smiling. I'm ready for March, Spring and my own little form of March Madness – another book GIVEAWAY+ a free Creative Textile Tool courtesy of Walnut Hollow. You can't have the complete Lutradur experience without this tool.  So come back soon, come often. Tell your friends.
